Upcycle, Reclaim and Repurpose

Upcycling, repurposing, and sustainability in the wood furniture world – Accent Woodworking has experience in this very area. Real wood furniture can usually be restored unless the piece was in water for more than several days. If you are wanting to salvage existing wood piece(s) damaged in the hurricane, we can help.

Tips on How to Help You Save Your Real Wood Furniture and Money

With a little research and luck, you may be able to take care of minor salvage and repairs yourself.
First, determine whether your furniture and cabinetry are real wood or composite. If there is any swelling (raised areas) it is most likely particleboard or fiber board. These materials are NOT salvageable. Most real wood can be brought back even if it means replacing drawer boxes and backing, these are minor items. Extensive damage should be left to an experienced cabinetmaker, like Rick from Accent Woodworking who has 45 years in the business.

  • Keep your furniture away from direct sunlight to prevent it from drying too quickly and unevenly, which can cause warping, twisting, and cracking. /li>
  • Drying the furniture properly can take several weeks or even months, so patience is key.
  • A bucket of water with a little Dawn dish detergent with a soft cloth to clean off mud and dirt inside and out, then gently hose off or wipe with a clean damp cloth.
  • Remove drawers, doors and back panels, if possible, if they are stuck, don’t force them.
  • To remove mold and mildew use mineral spirits.
  • White spots of a cloudy film on the finish can be treated with turpentine or household ammonia.
  • Use a low-speed fan to advance the drying process.
  • Try to preserve the original finish of antiques- restoration is preferable to refinishing.
