Real Wood: A Guide
What Does Real Wood Really Mean?
We build all our real wood custom furniture and custom cabinets locally in Largo, Florida. The craftsmanship and flawless finish of our custom-built wood furniture and cabinetry is second to none. All our real wood furniture and cabinetry are built in-house and DO NOT contain particleboard or pressboard. We use domestic hardwoods and plywood. When discussing furniture and cabinetry, the term “real wood” refers to pieces crafted from authentic lumber rather than synthetic materials.Let’s Break it Down
- Hardwood: These are genuine wood pieces, such as oak, maple, or pine. Oak is robust and commonly used for kitchen chairs and tables. Maple boasts durability and resistance to splitting, while pine offers versatility, and all can be stained and painted to match any style. Check out this post on stain vs. paint.
- Plywood: Furniture grade plywood refers to high-quality plywood suitable for crafting fine furniture and interior décor. It stands out due to its exceptional quality, aesthetic appeal, and precise manufacturing process. Furniture grade plywood is made from carefully selected superior veneers, ensuring consistent grain patterns and minimal defects. Here are a few key points:
- Wood veneer consists of thin slices of wood typically adhered to flat surfaces like doors, cabinets, and walls. The standard thickness for modern veneers is 1/52 inch. Using wood veneer allows you to cover a more accessible and affordable material with a layer of a rarer or more expensive wood.
- Hardboard: Also known as high-density fiberboard, is an engineered wood product rather than solid wood. It is created from exploded wood fibers sourced from old sawmill and forestry remains. These fibers are combined with steam and heat, then compressed into boards. No additional adhesive is needed, as the natural wood resin acts as the binding agent.
- Masonite: Our bed decking is the only product that is NOT solid wood. We use a Masonite board that is more stable for the bed decking vs. using plywood. It is more forgiving and flexes more. Masonite panels are strong, lightweight, and fire-resistant.
- Faux Wood: Artificial materials like MDF (medium-density fiberboard) and laminate imitate solid wood. MDF is a manufactured product made from pulverized wood fibers combined with resins and wax, then pressed into flat panels under high heat and pressure. A wood laminate is a thin layer of material applied to the surface of a wood project to alter its appearance. While laminates can be made from various materials, they are often crafted from veneers, which are thin slices of wood. Laminate, with its printed wood grain appearance, lacks the durability of real wood.
